Light Trucks Continue to Dominate National Market

October Year-to-Date Sales by Segment

A new report, based on the latest sales data for October 2019 from Wards Intelligence, shows a significant shift away from cars and towards light trucks, including SUVs, CUVs, vans, and pickups.

The upward trend in the popularity of light trucks over cars has been steady since 2013, when only 1.2% of market share separated the two segments. While car and truck sales were nearly even then – with trucks holding the slight edge – the divide between the two segments has grown to 42% through October 2019, with trucks capturing over 71% of the market. To put that in a sales perspective, trucks only outsold cars by about 160,000 vehicles through October 2013 – now trucks are outselling cars by more than 6 million.

In addition to the nationwide trend, an analysis of state market data is available through the first six months of 2019.
